Engine and Drive

There are two choices of engine with the new 2016 Honda Civic Coupe, both of which are four cylinder power plants. The base model is equipped with a 2.0L engine creating 158hp or you can step up to the more performance oriented 1.5L turbocharged engine outputting 174hp. Although both engines are low on the horsepower numbers, you will find that there’s a nice balance of power, control and smoothness no matter which engine you opt for. Both engines are paired to a continuously variable transmission in improve fuel economy even further and offer smooth accelerations throughout the power range. Only the base model LX offers a six speed manual transmission.

Although the turbo charged 1.5L engine is the more exciting of the two, you will find adequate power and superb handling with each choice. The 2016 Civic Coupe’s acceleration leaves a bit to be desired, especially for a stylish coupe that looks aggressively powerful. However, you benefit on the other hand from amazing fuel economy and in the long run the novelty wears off the acceleration but fuel economy will be there forever!

Our test drive yielded 6.9 L/100km of fuel consumption over 200km of city and highway driving, which was well within the posted rates of 7.5 L/100km in the city and 5.6 L/100km on the highway. Honda takes fuel economy one step further by adding an ECON mode button to trim down functions to the bare essentials stretching fuel economy as far as it can go. The Eco Assist feature takes things one step further and trains drivers on proper economical driving through the use of different colored lights on the gauges.

Interior and Exterior

The exterior of the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe has been fully redesigned and sports a much bolder, sporty appearance. Taking similar cues from the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan, the Coupe version brings a beautifully pleasing overall shape with a smooth and elegant front end, a bold and muscular rear end and a low and wide stance with some accent lines and curves on the sides. LED lights bring a sportier design to the front and rear ends, while the C-shaped tail lights make it unmistakably a Civic.

During my 1 week test drive I was stopped at least once a day by drivers and pedestrians asking what kind of car I was driving, while letting me know their praises about the pleasing design!

The interior of the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe sees a full redesign as well. The nice use of many different materials creates a sporty looking interior, while the digital touch screen display helps keep the dash uncluttered producing an elegant, minimalist appearance. The speedometer is digital as well allowing the driver a personal touch to select which information is displayed. The interior is much like the sedan version with lots of room for passengers both front and rear, lots of storage spaces and a sliding armrest for the front passengers.
