2019 Genesis G70 Review

Launched by Genesis in September 2017, the G70 completes the Genesis brand’s sedan lineup, along with the G90 flagship and Genesis G80. The 2019 Genesis G70 is the latest car to roll out from the stables of Hyundai’s luxury brand – Genesis.

Buyers get the option of a turbo four cylinder or a twin turbo V6 engine. While these engines are powerful, the automatic transmission can be a tad slow to respond, so it’s advisable to opt for the six speed manual transmission for those seeking top performance. On the whole, it is packed with luxurious materials and several features as standard.

SPORTY EXTERIOR

The 2019 Genesis G70 is unabashedly athletic as luxury sports styling oozes from every line and curve of the vehicle. A second glance and you realize the 2019 G70 is actually much larger than it looks. Genesis is a luxury brand and it had left no stone unturned in styling the G70 as luxury sports sedan.

Completing the athletic look, the 2019 G70 sits low to the ground with a wide stance. A wide grille with a dark chrome mesh design, along with the hood accent lines, air intakes and sleek headlights all come together into an attractive front end. The oversized 19-inch wheels with the red caliper brakes really help to highlight the sporty performance from the side view. A well defined trunk line, shark fin antenna and dual exhaust complete the look from the rear end.

LUXURIOUS INTERIOR

Living up to its reputation of ultra sports luxury, the 2019 Genesis G70’s interior is both plush and sleek. The quality nappa leather seats combine heating and cooling for the front seats with a quilted leather stitching design to provide a classy yet sporty look.

A minimalist dash adorns the interior of the 2019 G70, complete with a 7 or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s compatible with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Since most of the vehicle can be controlled from this touchscreen display, or the center console control knob, the dash is left free from button clutter.

The legroom and headroom are more than adequate and are comparable to other luxury sedans despite the G70 being placed in the compact sedan category. It can therefore be said that the 2019 G70 offers best in class interior passenger space.

PERFORMANCE AND DRIVE

The 2019 Genesis G70 is available in six trims equipped with either the 2.0L Turbo engine outputting 252hp or the 3.3L Turbo engine outputting 365hp. Both engines are paired with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Only the 2.0T engine offers the selection of rear wheel drive with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The 2019 G70 is fast and powerful no matter which engine you opt for. However, the turbo does create a slight lag from when you press the gas to when you feel the power, but when the power does kick in then you better be prepared to be launched at full speed! The steering feels true and the handling precise. The drive is a perfect combination of sport and comfort, so while you do feel the bumps, they are muted nicely.

The overall drive of the 2019 G70 is both pleasant when you want to cruise or exhilarating when you want to push the performance. The steering is quite responsive, helping the handling through turns and the option of sport mode really tunes the car to be ready for racing! The projected heads up display is a great addition and is one of the best available as it packs a lot of info into a small section on the windshield.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Traditionally, one has the tendency to opt for German carmakers like Mercedes, Audi and BMW when considering a luxury sedan. However, Genesis is out to disrupt their dominance in the luxury market with their economic, high quality, technologically advanced offerings. The 2019 Genesis G70 is a prime example of a sports luxury sedan that can displace the German equivalents. The only way to experience this for yourself is to take a 2019 G70 for a test drive yourself!
