2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Review

Since its inception, the Santa Fe has always been a three-row crossover SUV. However, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has become a two-row sport SUV, similar to last year’s model. The larger 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL still offers the option of 3rd row seating, but it’s no longer mandatory across all models.

The 2019 Santa Fe shares is built on the same platform as the Kia Sorento and compared with the previous model year, the 2019 Santa Fe is longer and wider, with its 2765mm wheelbase, up 65mm from the previous year. As expected, the increased size allows more room on the inside and better driving characteristics. While many may find the design of the previous Santa Fe a bit wacky, the 2019 Santa Fe has a modern look to it, mostly thanks to the sleek and low profile headlights.

Hyundai has carried on the engine from the previous model, equipping the 2019 Santa Fe with its 2.4L four cylinder engine which outputs 185hp and 178 lb ft torque and pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission with the option of a front wheel drive or all wheel drive. However, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has the option to upgrade to a more powerful 2.0L turbo four cylinder engine cranking out 235hp and 260 lb ft torque and paired with the 8-speed automatic and AWD.

While the base engine runs from 0-60mph in 10 seconds, the turbo engine covers the same in 7.8 seconds. What’s more, considering its size, the Santa Fe has a surprisingly smooth ride quality. There’s little engine vibration or outside wind noise with either engine. Bumpy roads and sharp turns are handled with ease, all while the steering still feels crisp. This is largely down to the seamless integration of the eight-speed transmission with the engine.

Stepping inside the cabin of the 2019 Santa Fe, you will immediately see that Hyundai has done a great job improving the overall quality and feel of the materials, delivering a top notch interior. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are equipped as standard, along with the 7-inch touchscreen display.

The cabin is well laid out and showcases a two-tone leather design, which gives the gives the appearance of sports and luxury. The seats are comfortable and made from fine quality leather, while additional options include LED interior lights, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a panoramic sunroof.

The all new Santa Fe manages to score high in the safety department, with features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, forward collision mitigation and Hyundai’s Safe Exit Assist, which temporarily locks the door if a vehicle is approaching from behind. All this safety technology comes equipped on even the base model.

Taking a step back and looking at the overall offering of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, it really delivers in all categories. With more space, better handling, a new sporty turbo engine, excellent safety features and decent driving dynamics, The 2019 Santa Fe is an attractive option in a fiercely contested segment.
