Reviewed: The New 2015 Mazda CX-3 Compact Crossover

It’s no secret that the market is awash with compact crossover SUVs these days! They are a relatively new segment of the market, created to meet the changing needs of today’s drivers. Are you considering buying such a vehicle? If so, here’s another model to add to your shortlist: the new 2015 Mazda CX-3!

As you might already know, the Japanese car maker had something of a brand refresh in recent times. Innovations in their engine technology mean they can sell cars that are frugal on fuel. And that’s good news for cost-conscious buyers. They still manage to keep the right blend of performance with fuel economy too.

Aside from the under-the-bonnet specs, Mazda’s latest generation of cars also look the part too. The CX-3 offers a fresh, stylish body which will suit any driver. So, what are the other features and benefits that the car boasts?

Choice of engines and transmissions

Some car makers offer a confusing choice of power plants. The Mazda CX-3 is available with just three engine and two gearbox options.

There are two petrol units and one diesel on offer:

  • 2.0-litre petrol – 118 horsepower, 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. Fuel economy of 47 mpg combined;
  • 2.0-litre petrol – 147 horsepower, 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds. Fuel economy of 44 mpg combined; and
  • 1.5-litre turbodiesel – 103 horsepower, 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds. Fuel economy of 70 mpg combined.

The engines can get mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Trim levels

When the Mazda CX-3 first got unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, we were pretty excited about what was on offer. There is a good level of standard features across the board with this model. That makes it a compact crossover SUV that offers excellent value for money.

The basic entry-level trim is called the SE. As standard, you get air conditioning, daytime running lights and cruise control. 4x electric windows and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system also come as part of the deal.

The SE-L trim includes LED front fog lights, automatic lights and wipers. You also receive rear parking sensors and a lane departure warning system as standard.

Topping the range is the Sport trim. You get half-leather seats, a Bose stereo system and adaptive LED headlights. Larger 18-inch alloy wheels also add to the sporty feel of this model!

Mick from Revolution Finance recommends choosing the “Nav” versions of those trim levels. That’s because you get satellite navigation thrown in with the deal, along with three years of free map updates.

Handling

If you’ve ever driven the Nissan Juke or Ford EcoSport, don’t assume that the Mazda CX-3 handles the same as them. Why? Because the suspension setup blows away those two competitor models!

Mazda devotes a lot of time and money to fine-tuning the handling on their cars. You only have to look at the sporty MX-5 roadster to see what I mean! When you take the CX-3 on the road, you’ll soon realize how stable and brilliant this car is to drive.

There is hardly any body roll when cornering at speed, a testament to Mazda’s engineering prowess. In fact; the car feels like you’re behind the wheel of a go-kart!
I recommend checking out the Mazda CX-3 today if you’re in the market for a compact crossover SUV.
