Socket to Me: Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid Announced, Detailed

2016 Cadillac CT6

So either the 2016 Cadillac CT6 is going to get absolutely terrible fuel economy or the plug-in hybrid version of the same car is going to get outstanding fuel economy. We say this because, while official fuel-economy estimates for the regular CT6 aren’t yet available, Cadillac is claiming that the plug-in hybrid variant that just debuted at the 2015 Shanghai auto show will “achieve fuel economy more than double that of the car’s conventional engine offerings.” That sounds impressive, although the number Cadillac is teasing will be rendered in MPGe, and is often very high for plug-in vehicles as they can complete a good portion of the efficiency test while running on electricity alone.

In addition to making efficiency claims, Cadillac also provided a few details on the CT6 plug-in hybrid’s powertrain. The setup combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a pair of electric motors, and a planetary transmission driving the rear wheels, as well as an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack fitted between the rear seats and the trunk. Total system output is quoted at 335 horsepower and 432 lb-ft of torque.

The CT6 plug-in hybrid will offer three driving modes—Normal, Sport, and Hold (wherein battery power is conserved so that charge can be conserved for later EV-only driving)—and an adjustable-on-the-fly, steering-wheel-paddle-initiated regenerative braking system similar to that in the Cadillac ELR. Cadillac says that more details—as well as that official MPGe fuel-economy number—for the CT6 in the “U.S. and other markets outside China” will be “released closer to the car’s introduction in those markets.”
