The Basics of Becoming a Better Driver

When you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, do you ever think about the fact that you are in charge of what is in effect a very large and potentially dangerous machine? Chances are, if you’ve been driving for a while, you barely give it a second thought if you ever do. But we probably all should because so many of us get sloppy with our driving and actually get worse, rather than better at it over time.

If you want to avoid being the cause of any accidents on the road, there are, of course, also several practical things, quite apart from reminding yourself of your vehicle’s danger potential, that you can do to become a better driver. Here are some of them:

Be More Conscientious

Perhaps the best thing that you can do to become a better driver is to become more conscientious about your driving habits. They say that practice makes perfect, but once we learn to drive we stop practicing. Obviously, doing things automatically is not a bad thing per se, but if you get into bad habits it can be, and being more aware of them will help you to correct them.

Never Drink and Drive

If you want to be a better driver, and you don’t want to be facing a nasty DUI or OUi charge, which you can learn more about here if you’re interested in knowing just how bad the penalties can be, then don’t drink a single drop if you’re planning to drive. You might think as long as you’re under the limit you’re fine, but quite often, even a little alcohol can lower your reaction times and skew your judgment. Take control by taking alcohol out of the equation completely.

Enroll on a Defensive Driving Course

You can find out more about defensive driving courses here, and I suggest that you do just that because, not only can you lower your insurance premiums by taking such a course, but much more importantly, you can help to prevent accidents by refreshing your driving skills and learning how to take prompt action when required. You’ll also learn about how easily alcohol can impair you and the different alcohol-related driving charges that can file against you, which will probably help you with the tip just above.

Get a Little Help

There are so many gadgets, like parking sensors, that help us to be better drivers that, if you know you have a weakness, it is always worth seeking out a gadget for that weakness and using it to your full advantage. Of course, you should work on improving your parking skills or whatever you struggle with too – you should never rely on gadgets alone, but it can’t hurt to have them backing you up on the road.

Stop Speeding

Pretty much everyone speeds once in a while and going a couple of miles over the limit usually isn’t a problem, but it’s baffling why so many drivers feel the need to speed excessively all the time. Mostly, it doesn’t help you get anywhere faster, but it does decrease your safety and the safety of everyone around you, so rethink your need to speed.

Becoming a better driver takes time and constant vigilance, but it really is worth it!
