2016 Acura RDX Review

After the tremendous success of the 2015 model, the Japanese automaker introduced the facelifted 2016 Acura RDX at the Chicago show. Packed with all the latest technology, the 2016 Acura RDX is a versatile crossover SUV designed with sophistication and performance in mind. Crossover fans will be happy with the $41,990 starting price tag and the choice of three different trim levels.

ENGINE & DRIVE

All the 2016 Acura RDX models are powered by the same 3.5L six cylinder engine paired with a six speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and grade logic control. This performance combination delivers 279 horsepower which allows the 2016 RDX to cruise smoothly and quietly as well as deliver a powerful acceleration when needed.

Usually a crossover carrying such a powerful engine has to compromise on fuel economy, but the 2016 Acura RDX uses Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology to disables three of the engine’s cylinders during steady acceleration, helping to improve fuel economy. Rated at 12.4 L/100km in the city and 8.6 L/100km on the highway, our 200km combined city and highway test drive yielded a 11.3 L/100km fuel economy which is impressive for a midsize crossover SUV with almost 300 horsepower!

Driving the 2016 Acura RDX, you notice the quiet yet powerful engine, delivering a smooth drive with peppy accelerations. Combined with a responsive handling around tight corners and an overall reassured performance, makes the 2016 RDX one of the best crossover SUVs in its class.

TECHNOLOGY

Loaded with advanced technologies, the 2016 Acura RDX strives (and succeeds) to offer a pleasant and convenient driving experience. Features like the rain sensing wipers, push start engine, rear ventilation and dual display screens speak to the luxury and convenience offered by the 2016 Acura RDX.

Upgrade to the tech package to receive features like blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alerts, rear seat heating and power folding side mirrors for the ultimate in convenience and safety. I did find the cross traffic alerts to be a bit on the sensitive side with a few false alarms.

EXTERIOR

The 2016 Acura RDX boasts an athletic shape with a sporty front fascia featuring the Acura signature Jewel Eye LED head and taillights. The large wheels, side accent lines, chrome highlights, rear overhang spoiler and 3D style grille all help to create a powerful looking exterior design.

INTERIOR

We had the pleasure to test out a 2016 Acura RDX with a white leather two toned interior. This simple yet elegant interior combines white, black and chrome to create a bright, cheery and upscale environment. I like that the dash has all the controls in logical places, without being overcomplicated by too many buttons. The dual display screens, giant moon roof and feature-rich interior really showcase the luxury offered by the RDX.

The 2016 RDX succeeds at versatility for transporting all combinations of passengers and cargo with the 60/40 folding rear seats, while the power open and closing tailgate makes loading and unloading so much easier.
