In BMW’s mushrooming model range, clarity of purpose is getting harder to find. Take, for example, the 4-series Gran Coupe. It’s a coupe; it must be. It says so right in the name. Besides, it’s an even-numbered model, which in BMW nomenclature means coupe. But it’s also a four-door, so most people will think of it as a sedan. It’s closely related to the 3-series sedan, albeit with a lower and sleeker roofline. And while in profile it appears to have a distinct trunk, the lid actually incorporates the rear glass, thus making it a hatchback. So the 4-series Gran Coupe is at once a coupe, a sedan, and a hatchback. Don’t expect the changes to this model for 2018 to do anything to alleviate the confusion—mostly because they’re so minor.
