2018 GMC Acadia Review

The 2018 GMC Acadia carries over the big changes from the 2017 redesign including two new engines to choose from along, various seating configurations and all while shedding 700lbs! While not much is new for the 2018 Acadia, it does add a tire fill alert feature across all models, while shifting around some other features and options between models. While the real impressive changes came from the full redesign of the 2017 model, while the 2018 GMC Acadia is largely the same.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The bold exterior lines of the 2018 GMC Acadia showcase the ruggedness of the exterior, while the overall shape is very similar to the related 2018 Chevy Traverse. The front end sports a beefy grille, some accent lines on the hood and chrome highlights. Overall, much rounder edges than the sharper ones seen in the 2018 Traverse. The side profile showcases a classic SUV look with a few pleasing curves and the rear end ties the entire design together with nicely proportioned tail lights, a chrome strip and dual exhaust.

The reduced dimensions brought about by the 2017 redesign leaves the 2018 Acadia shorter in length and width, making it one of the smallest SUVs in its class. The resulting more compact design allows the Acadia to shed 700lbs and opens up options for a new choice of engines. Also, the smaller dimensions improve the maneuverability into tight parking spots and fitting into undergrounds.

The overall exterior design of the 2018 GMC Acadia is tasteful and refined. The smooth edges will make the design last the test of time without appearing outdated, but the cost is a design that may not inspire.

INTERIOR VERSATILITY

While the more compact design of the 2018 GMC Acadia definitely helps with maneuverability, the trade off is a smaller interior passenger and cargo capacity. With various configurations for passengers and cargo, there’s a model available that’s perfect for every driver’s situation. Choose from five, six or seven passenger seating configurations and pair it with a choice of premium cloth, leather or perforated leather seating surfaces. While the third row may be a bit tight for adults, it folds flat to free up cargo space when not in use.

I found the interior of the 2018 Acadia to be intuitive and nicely styled, without the button clutter seen on many other dashes. The materials included a nice selection of wood grains, soft touch plastics and stitched leather and came together in a high quality build. The intuitive layout places controls exactly where you expect to find them and the touch screen display helps minimize the number of buttons and dials on the dash. Another often overlooked feature is storage areas, and the 2018 Acadia has plenty throughout the front console, doors and armrest areas.

The 2018 GMC Acadia also comes with many convenience options and plenty of built in driving technology. Lots of innovation can be seen in the liftgate, which is height adjustable to restrict the opening height for tight spaces and can also be opened hands free with the wave of your foot.

DRIVING AND PERFORMANCE

The redesigned GMC Acadia brings the choice between two new engines more appropriate for its smaller and lighter frame. You can opt for the smaller 2.5L four cylinder engine outputting 193hp or the 3.6L six cylinder engine outputting 310hp. Both engine options are paired with a six speed automatic transmission and the optional AWD, with front wheel drive coming standard.

The lighter frame of the 2018 Acadia leads to some nimble handling around corners, giving off the impression of driving more of a car than an SUV. Another benefit to the weight reduction comes from the responsive accelerations and braking. Even under a fuller load, the 2018 Acadia has no problem zipping around town or overtaking on the highway.

The smaller size also provides the driver with easier maneuverability. Coupled with the bird’s eye view camera when reversing, the 2018 Acadia can fit into the tightest of spaces. The overall driving feel is quite pleasant for the passengers inside, providing a smooth drive, a soft steering feel, a quiet interior and power at hand when needed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The modernized 2018 GMC Acadia, packed with all the latest driving technology, carves out its spot within the mid-sized SUV segment nicely. With plenty of configurations available and a starting price of $34,000, you’re sure to find the model that works best for your situation.
