2019 Ford Edge Review

The 2019 Ford Edge continues to be a perfect example of a roomy SUV that doesn’t need to have three rows of seating. Comfortable, versatile, spacious and sporty, the 2019 Edge brings all these characteristics together into an elegant and sleek package. With class-leading ride quality, a great range of model trims and lots of luxury features, the 2019 Ford Edge is the perfect choice for anyone after one of the best all-round SUVs.

The 2019 Ford Edge sees a refresh of last year’s model, but many of the subtle changes do amount to quite a difference in appearance and convenience. Also being added to the 2019 model year are a slight increase in power paired with a new transmission and an additional trim level which now includes a performance ST model.

SLEEK EXTERIOR

The 2019 Ford Edge showcases an exterior that’s aptly named due to its crisp edges, accent lines, sculpted body and high waistline, which all come together into a refined and elegant appearance. While it’s nowhere near overkill, the 2019 Edge is definitely not sedated or boring either.

The muscular exterior sees some updates to the front end headlights, grille and fog light air intakes creating a sleeker, more distinct look. The rear end is updated with a tiered bumper adding some flare to the design, along with some sleeker tail lights that no longer flow the full width of the rear.

Overall, some welcomed design changes to really update the exterior design by making it sleeker and more modern.

MODERN INTERIOR

Stepping inside the cabin of the 2019 Ford Edge you can immediately notice the classic Ford design language, with the minimalistic dash with futuristic buttons, the large touch screen, elegant ambient lighting and the overall high quality fit and finish. New to the 2019 Edge is the rotary dial shift knob, which replaces the stick shifter and frees up a ton of space in the console storage and also makes the center console much sleeker.

The 2019 Edge has class leading space for 5 adults and luggage, along with many storage spaces to provide convenience and organization for daily travel. A panoramic moon roof spans the entire length of the interior and really brightens up the cabin to make a happy environment for passengers.

The 2019 Edge’s minimalist dash is carried over from previous model years and gives a modern feel to the interior, while still being intuitive to control. The distinct shapes of the air vents with chrome trim are quite unique and really help to accent the dash and center console with a modern look and feel.

New for the 2019 Ford Edge is an additional trim level – the ST which brings performance tuning for a much sportier drive along with some racing inspired finishing throughout the design.

I found 3 features of the 2019 Ford Edge Titanium to be the especially useful for my driving experience. First, the convenience of the hands free power lift gate (standard option) which can be opened by waving your foot in front of a sensor on the exterior so you don’t have to put down your cargo to press the key fob or lift gate button. Second, safety of the enhanced park assist (optional feature) which will parallel or reverse stall park your 2019 Edge automatically! I can’t recommend this feature enough for drivers who aren’t completely confident with their parallel parking skills – not only will the automatic parking feature fit the Edge into the tightest spaces, but it also parallel parks the Edge about 6 inches from the curb every time, preventing any accidental rim damage. Third, since all driving time is spent in the interior, the customizable ambient lighting offers a calming selection of colours to modify the mood of the interior to suit.

PERFORMANCE AND DRIVE

The 2019 Ford Edge comes equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder engine outputting 250hp (5hp more than the previous year). This engine pairs with a front wheel drive (optional upgrade to all wheel drive) and the new 8 speed automatic transmission. Upgrade to the Ford Edge ST and you get the performance oriented 2.7L turbo charged V6 engine that outputs 335hp and comes equipped with AWD as standard.

The 2019 Ford Edge Titanium we tested came with the 2.0L engine, which offered a smooth, quiet and comfortable driving experience. The new 8 speed automatic provide some smooth gear changes and never fumbled to determine which gear was appropriate during the zippy accelerations. Additionally, precise steering and sturdy handling both came together to provide an all-round confident and pleasurable driving experience.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The 2019 Ford Edge Titanium, in our books, remains the king of the five-seater SUV segment, beating out our next in line Nissan Murano. The 2019 Edge is practical, luxurious, quick, and most importantly delivers amazing value for money. A test drive will easily help solidify the 2019 Edge’s driving experience in your mind, and will for an easy buying decision!
