The 2016 Nissan Rogue is sleek and compact SUV, expertly styled and with a perfect combination of power and efficiency plus ample, versatile cargo space. The SUV is actually undeserving of its name, as it’s anything but a rogue – it runs smoothly and elegantly along the roads with great fuel economy, and is an honest and fair performer.
Engine and Drive
The 2016 Nissan Rogue is equipped with a 2.5L four cylinder engine outputting 170hp and pairs with a continuously variable transmission. This is the only engine available for all models, and it runs smoothly and comfortably, exactly as one would expect from a compact SUV. The car handles well and feels composed, and steering and braking are both well-tuned, responsive aspects of the vehicle.
Although some may find the acceleration lacking, I found the overall feel of the drive to be reliable and pleasant. Thanks mainly to the CVT, there’s a perfect balance of power and smoothness that yields an effortless and enjoyable ride for all passengers.
The biggest positive of all comes from the unrivalled fuel economy. The 2016 Rogue has posted fuel economies of 9.1 L/100km in the city and 7.1 L/100km on the highway. Although our 200km test drive yielded a 9.5 L/100km it was mostly city driving and this is still an impressive number for an SUV!
Interior and Exterior
Much like the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder, the 2016 Rogue boasts a well-appointed interior, constructed with the finest of materials and assembled with top quality in mind. The Rogue is simple, clean and attractive on the inside, and finds the perfect balance between luxury and comfort. Front-seat passengers have ample legroom and headspace, regardless of height, and second-row seats come with an intelligent slide and recline function providing rear passengers with plenty of legroom or more cargo space without passengers. Often back-seat space is the main issue with compact SUV’s, but Nissan have successfully brushed the problem aside by giving flexibility to the owner to cater to the needs of fellow passengers or cargo. Even with the second-row pushed back, a good amount of cargo room is still available for use, but handily this can be increased when required. Nissan also offers an optional third-row seating for 7 passenger capacity, a rare option for a compact SUV.
The exterior is tasteful and timeless with a “u-shaped” grille, similar to the 2016 Nissan Murano, which continues along the hood to produce a modern and refined look. The 2016 Nissan Rogue truly fits the description of a compact SUV with its small yet tidy appearance. The strong look of the rear end shows off cargo fitting capability and sporty performance. Curves and accent lines run all around the vehicle, adding to the overall sleekness.
Advanced Technology
The base model 2016 Nissan Rogue contains the usual assortment of modern day technology including a Bluetooth and USB connectivity, rearview camera, keyless entry, traction control and the full array of airbags. Step up to the next models to get the Around View monitor for 360 degree views to help maneuver into tight spaces and many more safety warning systems. The most useful feature of all is undoubtedly the aforementioned EZ Flex seating system (included in all models) to adjust rear seats depending on passenger and cargo combinations.
Final Thoughts
The 2016 Nissan Rogue is a forward-thinking compact SUV, designed with modern and contemporary influences and perfect for families looking for versatility. Starting at $24,948, the 2016 Rogue is fairly priced for such a stylish, spacious and reliable vehicle. Once you take one for a test drive you’ll be blown away by the smooth ride and flexible interior space.
