The luxury mid-size segment continues its strong economic momentum and what you will find from the 2021 Mercedes GLC 300 specifically, is eccentric performance. It doesn’t pack as big of a punch as the higher performance models such as the AMG GLC 63 flagship, but instead the 2021 GLC 300 is more about aesthetics and refinement. Still, its turbocharged four-cylinder engine is able to push the GLC 300 off the line fairly quickly. A more eco-friendly plug-in hybrid also makes its way into the model lineup as an alternative option for better fuel economy with the opportunity to jump on the EV bandwagon.
New for 2021 includes more standard features including a passive hands-free entry, self-parking function and cross-traffic alert. Automatic high-beams and a 360-degree camera vision system can now be purchased separately without opting for specific configuration packages. A Cirrus Silver color also makes its way into the list of purchase options this year.
A 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 255 horsepower and is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Standard trims are offered in a rear-wheel drive configuration while the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is available as a purchase upgrade option. Fuel economy scores a very respectable 21 mpg on the city and 28 mpg on the highway (23mpg combined) thanks to the ultra-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the rear-wheel-drive setup. We recommend opting for the 4-Matic all-wheel drive system for added traction in slippery and wet conditions with only a slight 1 mpg penalty to the fuel economy.
While the 255 horsepower turbocharged engine doesn’t entice adrenaline, it still manages to push and accelerate off the line very quickly thanks to the low gear ratios of its 9-speed automatic transmission. Both city and highway driving proved to be both a comfortable and relaxing ride while still offering sporty ergonomic front seating positions through the bucket-style seats. Rear seating also offers good legroom for 2-3 mid-size adults.
Mercedes continues its German-style fashion trend in the 2021 GLC 300’s interior with a dark and elegant theme including a smooth mahogany wood trim on its entire center console, brushed aluminum and black leather seating. The interior is also outfitted with luxury amenities like dual climate controls, power adjustable front seats and heated cushions. Upgradable purchase options also include a heads-up display, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats for added comfort. Rear seats don’t have the ability to recline but can be electronically folded down in a 60/40 split configuration via a push button switch located in the trunk area.
Sitting in the lower to mid-price bracket, the 2021 GLC 300 doesn’t have the latest tech features Mercedes has to offer, but the 10.25” infotainment touchscreen supports the most recent MBUX software with available voice controls and navigation. Capacitive touch buttons located on the steering wheel provide ease of access in navigating through intuitive smartphone, media and navigation applications. Both Android Auto and Apple Carplay are supported on standard models while a more premium audio system and wireless smartphone charging are available as purchase upgrades.
The entry level 2021 Mercedes GLC 300 model can be had for $44,250 while the 4Matic all-wheel drive system costs an extra $1,950. An available plug-in hybrid model costs $53,000. Overall, the GLC 300 offers a great introductory Mercedes experience with a great quality and luxurious interior design, a smooth and exceptional driving feel and a decent premium price tag.
