Tangled Up in Blue: Aston Martin Plays One Note with DB11 Q Concept

Aston Martin made waves at the 2016 Geneva auto show, where the British brand unveiled the then all-new DB11. With a sturdy and lightweight aluminum structure and powered by a twin-turbocharged V-12, the DB11 successfully combined modern technology with classic styling that evolved the brand’s long-stagnant design language. One year later, Aston Martin is again unveiling a DB11 at the Geneva auto show, and it’s, well, it’s blue. All the way blue.

Dubbed the DB11 Q by Aston Martin, the one-of-a-kind sports coupe is designed to showcase the work of Aston Martin’s bespoke Q division. Separating the DB11 by Q from any ordinary DB11 is a Blue Man Group–inspired color combination that pairs a deep shade of Zaffre Blue paint with exposed (but presumably lacquered) carbon fiber highlighting the front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser area, hood vents, and mirror caps. The exterior color scheme carries in to the leather-lined interior, where other details include headrests embossed with the Q logo and a Zaffre Blue four-piece luggage set. Sadly, the DB11 Q by Aston Martin’s striking color combo is burdened by its wheels painted in Zaffre Blue. To our eyes, that is a styling faux pas, detracting from the DB11 Q’s otherwise gorgeous looks.

Nevertheless, the DB11 Q’s wheels are testament to the Q by Aston Martin program, where Aston Martin doesn’t create a car designed to appeal to everyone but tailors it to the buyer’s tastes alone. You want blue wheels, you get blue wheels. The DB11 by Q may not be the darling of this year’s Geneva show, but it’s sure to leave an impression on show goers.
