2020 Genesis G70 Review

The 2020 Genesis G70 offers a seat in the competitive arena of luxury sedans. With all barriers removed, the 2020 G70 is able to unleash its full design potential balancing both elegance and aggression in one luxurious package. Sporting a meaty 3.3L twin turbo engine producing 365 horses with AWD, the G70 is no slouch either. Available is also a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that still outputs a respectable 265 horsepower with the ability to configure the G70 in RWD configuration.

The 2020 Genesis G70 can be had starting at $43,000 for the lower 2.0T Advanced AWD while the 3.3 V6 Turbo variant bumps up the price to $58,000.

SPORTY EXTERIOR

The 2020 G70 follows a similar German design philosophy to the luxury performance sedans like the BMW 3 series, Mercedes C class and Audi A Series. A long front hood, short front wheel overhangs and a wide and low stance are what create the aggressive look to the human eye.

Up front, the G70 showcases a billeted, crest-like grille and oversized air intakes, which creates the appearance of sporty sophistication. Both front and rear lamps are powered by LEDs to complete the new-aged digital look. Standard options come equipped with 18” wheels while larger multi-spoke 19” wheels and dual chrome-tip exhaust pipes can be upgraded as an option.

Aftermarket-like skirting, wide fenders, and dual exhaust complete the sporty profile on the exterior.

ELEGANT INTERIOR

The elegant interior of the 2020 Genesis G70 is sewn together with premium quilted Nappa leather seating, brushed aluminum center console and a perforated leather steering wheel that’s soft and smooth to the touch.

There’s plenty of space for five full sized adults to sit comfortably and be surrounded by the luxurious soft touch materials, the bright panoramic sunroof and the eye-catching red stitching throughout the interior.

A heads-up display and a standard 8” infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard on the G70. Where Genesis tries to beat its competition is its available Lexicon surround sound audio system delivering crisp and clear sound and its 16-way power adjustable driver’s seat.

AGGRESSIVE POWER

Powering the G70 can be configured as either a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque while the beefier 3.3L V6 outputs a massive 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0L 4-cylinder can be configured either as a RWD or AWD configuration while the V6 configuration is only available in AWD.

Mated to these engines is a snappy 8-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters for manual sequential shifting on the fly. The 2020 Genesis G70 delivers smooth and quiet cruising when needed but exhilarating acceleration and handling when driving spirit craves a little more performance.

Engineering emphasis is put into the chassis design, utilizing a combination of high-strength steel and aluminum. The result is improved body rigidity and collision absorption for bettering handling and safety, while keeping the overall curb weight low for better performance.

The 2020 G70 will come standard with dynamic damping suspension and a fixed caliper 4/2 piston Brembo brakes in the front and rear respectively. Both of these features will contribute to excellent handling and braking capability without compromising ride comfort.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The 2020 Genesis G70 has got all the bells and whistles in terms of looks and features with a proper 8” infotainment and full suite of safety tech features. The twin-scroll turbo 2.0L engine provides linear power delivery, while the dynamic damping suspensions do well with keeping the G70 composed during city driving and responsive under heavy handling.

The quiet cabin space and exceptional quality of materials are the definitive high points here. But in terms of tech, there isn’t exactly anything that makes the 2020 G70 stand out on its own. If we had to make any requests it would be for a dual-clutch transmission, better exhaust tone and torque vectoring to bump up its performance characteristics.
