2020 Mazda CX-9 Review

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 sees only a few small changes since the CX-9 was fully redesigned just a few years ago. While there is a price increase for the 2020 CX-9, thankfully there’s extra equipment like the addition of 2nd row captain’s chairs, a new touch screen display and a little bit more torque for the engine. Some buyers could be attracted to the 2020 CX-9 solely for its looks, but this SUV’s beauty is more than just skin deep – it has the power at least to appeal to a more diverse range of customers than Mazda’s typical set of loyal owners.

SLEEK EXTERIOR

The 2020 Mazda CX-9’s exterior looks like it could have come from one of the world’s best design houses. It uses the profile of a crossover SUV but with lines and curves making it look smaller than it actually is.

The front view of the 2020 Mazda CX-9 presents an elegant and sporty appearance with curves in all the right places to give the vehicle some presence and character. A signature Mazda grille is a large part of the front end, while sleek and narrow headlights, air intakes and chrome highlights all come together into the bold design. The sharp contours, sleek lines and a pleasing overall shape of the 2020 CX-9 make it more striking than the majority of other seven-passenger SUVs in this market.

The rear end of the 2020 CX-9 ties it all together into an elegant package, with round and narrow tail lights, dual exhaust, and a shark fin antenna. The 2020 Mazda CX-9 is truly a head-turner from all angles, with a design that makes it stand out in a crowd.

ELEGANT INTERIOR

While the beautiful exterior of the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is usually enough to convince buyers, stepping into the cabin will no doubt be the final convincer! The uniquely refined interior uses high quality materials, an eye catching design and is all put together with a high quality build.

The elegant interior of the 2020 CX-9 provides all the desired daily driver functionality, but goes one step further to present the interior with a top-notch design that matches the design beauty of the exterior. New for 2020 is the option to swap in captain’s chairs for the second row, which are also heated in the Signature trim. A new touchscreen display adorns the dash and a power function is added to slide and tilt the second row seats.

The 2020 CX-9’s convenient interior is equipped with all the latest features and technology including 4 USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, 3 zone climate control, height-adjustable power rear liftgate, a heads up windshield projected display and much more. The two tone white and black leather interior of the CX-9 we tested was truly a treat. The design added a bright and elegant touch to the cabin, which is really pleasing to the eyes.

PERFORMANCE AND DRIVE

The traditional sporty performance of Mazda vehicles makes its way to the 2020 CX-9 and really helps it to shine. Under the hood sits a 2.5L turbo charged four cylinder engine capable of pushing out 250hp and 320 lb-ft of torque at only 2,000 RPM. Power is sent to the front or all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is a few less gears compared with some of its popular rivals.

For customers that really enjoy driving, the 2020 CX-9 doesn’t feel far off of being a natural progression of the little roadster. Being enjoyable on twisty roads is one thing, but the CX-9 also impresses on the open highway too. That’s where the majority of models will spend their time on the road, so the manufacturer has covered all the bases. But it’s the CX-9’s ability to take a corner that will impress the most.

All the specs come together to give the driver and passengers an exhilarating and sporty driving experience. The 2020 Mazda CX-9 successfully combines responsive and powerful acceleration with great steering feedback and athletic handling which is surprising for an SUV of its size. Even when cruising, the 2020 CX-9 delivers a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride for all passengers

FINAL THOUGHTS

From $39,900, the 2020 CX-9 is extremely agile, comfortable and quiet among affordable midsized three-row SUVs, not to mention extremely good value for money. The range topping Signature Trim of the 2020 CX-9 starts at $51,500 which may be greater than you would imagine spending on a Mazda, but the elegant design and top notch materials puts in on the playing field of other luxury SUVs.
